Caribbean Escape

Walled Cities, a River Town, and an Island Closer to Nicaragua

Colombia’s Caribbean coast is deceptively varied, and this itinerary is built to prove it. You start in Cartagena’s 500-year-old walled city, move inland to Mompox – a colonial river town so isolated it barely changed in centuries – then fly out past the mainland entirely to San Andres, an island where the water runs through seven shades of turquoise and the culture is closer to the English-speaking Caribbean than to Bogota. Three completely different Colombias, back to back.

Day by Day

Day 1Arrive in Cartagena

Transfer from Rafael Nunez International Airport to your hotel in or near the walled city. Cartagena’s heat and humidity hit the moment you step off the plane, so we keep this first evening unhurried – a walk through the old town as the light goes gold, dinner somewhere close, and an early night before the trip properly starts.

Day 2The Walled City and Castillo San Felipe

A walking tour through the UNESCO-listed old town – centuries of Spanish colonial, Moorish-influenced, and Republican architecture, still lived in rather than preserved behind glass. In the afternoon, the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas, a 17th-century fortress with tunnels engineered so sound would carry and confuse attacking forces. We close the day the way Cartagena intends it to be closed: walking Las Murallas, the old city walls, at sunset.

Day 3Rosario Islands

A boat out to the Rosario Islands, a cluster of coral-reef islands about an hour offshore, for a full day of clear water that feels a world away from the old town’s energy. Back into Cartagena by evening, with Getsemani – looser, more street-art-heavy, better nightlife – as the natural choice for a last dinner in the city.

Day 4Overland to Mompox

A road and river transfer inland to Mompox, a town on an island in the Magdalena River that’s stayed remarkably isolated – its colonial center has barely changed in centuries. By the time you arrive, cobblestone streets and church facades that once drew Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s attention (and more than one film adaptation of his work) make it obvious why this detour is worth the travel time. Once settled in, a tuk-tuk tour of the historic center leads into a visit to one of Mompox’s gold filigree workshops – a craft practiced here since colonial times – paired with a tasting of vino momposino, the local fruit wine. As evening falls, a cruise along the Magdalena River with a cocktail in hand is the best way to see the town from the water.

Day 5Mompox, then on to Barranquilla

A hands-on cheese-making workshop with a local culinary expert starts the morning – cuajada and queso costeno are Caribbean-coast staples, and making them yourself beats just eating them. After free time for lunch, an ecological tour into the Pijino wetlands follows: a boat ride along a quieter arm of the Magdalena River, watching for herons, caimans, and howler monkeys, timed to catch the sunset over the water. From there it’s the overland transfer to Barranquilla – the logistical bridge back to the coast and, as it happens, Colombia’s Carnaval capital. If timing and energy allow, a quick look at the Malecon del Rio along the Magdalena gives you a sense of the city’s working-port identity before you turn in for the night.

Day 6Fly to San Andres

A flight out to San Andres, and a complete change of register: from colonial stone and river heat to an island in the Mar de Siete Colores – the Sea of Seven Colors – named for the stacked bands of turquoise visible from the beach. Spend the afternoon doing exactly what the island is for: nothing in particular, with your feet in the water.

Day 7Johnny Cay and El Acuario

A boat day out to Johnny Cay and El Acuario, the two small islets most visitors build a San Andres trip around – shallow, startlingly clear water that’s as easy to swim in as it looks in photos. The surrounding reef sits inside the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized marine protected area, so the snorkeling holds up against anywhere else in the Caribbean.

Day 8Departure

A final morning on the island – one more swim, a last walk through town – before your transfer to the airport for your onward or return flight.
