El Alma de Mompox
A Short, Deep Dive Into Colombia’s Best-Kept River Town
Mompox sits on an island in the Magdalena River, far enough from any airport that it stayed almost untouched for centuries – the kind of place that drew Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s imagination and still looks the part. This short itinerary is built for travelers who want to go past the postcard view: a tuk-tuk through the historic center, hands-on time with the town’s famous gold filigree artisans and its cheese makers, an evening cruise on the Magdalena, and a boat trip into the wetlands where the river does most of the talking. It works as a stand-alone long weekend or as an add-on to a longer Caribbean coast itinerary.
Day by Day
Day 1Arrival and the Historic Center
Reception at the airport (or at the end of the overland transfer from the coast) and check-in at your hotel. A tuk-tuk tour through Mompox’s historic center takes in its riverside plazas and colonial churches, before an afternoon visit to one of the town’s gold filigree workshops – a craft practiced here since the colonial era – paired with a tasting of vino momposino, the local fruit wine. As evening falls, a cruise along the Magdalena River with a cocktail in hand is the best way to see the town from the water.
Day 2Cheese, Culture, and the Pijino Wetlands
Breakfast, then a hands-on cheese-making workshop with a local culinary expert – cuajada and queso costeno are Caribbean-coast staples, and making them is a better introduction than just eating them. Free time for lunch in town. In the afternoon, an ecological tour into the Pijino wetlands: a boat ride along a quieter arm of the Magdalena River, watching for herons, caimans, and howler monkeys, timed to end with the sunset over the water.
Day 3Departure
A final morning to walk the cobblestone streets or pick up filigree jewelry to take home, before your transfer to the airport (or on to your next stop on the coast).

Good to Know
Mompox works well on its own as a short break, or stitched onto a longer Caribbean coast trip like our Caribbean Escape journey – ask us about combining the two. It also pairs well with Medellín: Satena flies direct from Medellín to Mompox twice a week, on Mondays and Fridays, in about 1 hour 7 minutes, so the journey can start right after your time in Medellín. As with every ColombiaSky itinerary, there’s no fixed price shown here because there’s no fixed trip: request a quote and we’ll turn this into a real plan with real numbers, built around your dates and group size.
