Eastern Colombian Andes: Páramos, Colonial Towns and Canyons

The Eastern Colombian Andes at a Glance

The Eastern Colombian Andes stretch from Bogotá through Boyacá and Santander to Huila and Tolima: colonial towns like Villa de Leyva and Barichara, high páramos and sacred lagoons, the Chicamocha Canyon, hot springs and the Tatacoa Desert. ColombiaSky designs private trips across the region, starting from Bogotá.

This is where Colombia’s history runs deepest. The Muisca people built their world around these lagoons, the Spanish founded their first inland cities here, and the independence campaign was won on these roads. Today it is a region of whitewashed towns, cool mountain air, good food and some of the most dramatic landscapes in the country.

WHAT TO DO

Signature experiences in the Eastern Colombian Andes

Bogotá’s food and history

Bogotá

The Gold Museum, La Candelaria and the fruit tour at a traditional market, plus a fine-dining evening in one of the city’s best restaurants.

A cathedral inside a salt mine

Zipaquirá

The underground Salt Cathedral, an easy day from Bogotá, often combined with the sacred lagoon of Guatavita.

Colonial Boyacá

Villa de Leyva and Ráquira

One of the largest colonial plazas in the Americas, fossils from an ancient sea, vineyards and the pottery town of Ráquira.

Hot springs and spa days

Paipa, Boyacá

Thermal pools and spa hotels by Lake Sochagota, a restful stop between colonial towns.

Barichara and the Camino Real

Santander

Stone streets and terracotta roofs, then a walk on the old stone trail down to the village of Guane.

Canyon and adventure

Chicamocha and San Gil

A cable car across the Chicamocha Canyon, and rafting or paragliding around San Gil for travelers who want adrenaline.

Páramos and high lagoons

Chingaza and Iguaque

Walk among frailejones in Colombia’s high-altitude páramo, with a local guide and current park access rules checked before you go.

Stars over the desert

Tatacoa Desert, Huila

Red and gray canyons by day and some of the clearest night skies in Colombia, with a local astronomy session after dark.

Birdwatching and cooking

Across the region

Cloud-forest birding near Bogotá and a cooking class to master ajiaco, the region’s chicken and potato soup.

The Logistics

Getting there: Bogotá’s El Dorado airport is the gateway; Bucaramanga and Neiva have domestic airports. Getting around: most of the region is reached by road with a private driver; Villa de Leyva is about three to four hours from Bogotá depending on traffic. Altitude: Bogotá sits at about 2,600 meters, and the páramos are much higher, so plan an easy first day. Weather: cool in the mountains, warm in Santander’s canyons and hot in the Tatacoa Desert.

How Long to Stay

Three nights in Bogotá with day trips to Zipaquirá and Guatavita, then two nights in Villa de Leyva, makes a good first week. Add Barichara and the Chicamocha Canyon for a second week. Our Andes & Colonial Colombia journey is a good starting point.

Combine It with the Rest of Colombia
